Racetams

Racetams are a class of synthetic nootropic compounds that can improve overall cognition. These highly effective nootropics are known for their ability to improve memory and focus as well as being neuroprotective. I’m going to cover the basics of Racetams today: benefits, dosages, side effects, and a recommended starter stack.

As discussed in our other article- “beginners guide to nootropics”, it’s important to mention here that Dr. Corneliu E. Giurgea created the first ever Racetam (Piracetam) as well as coining the term nootropic. He can be looked at as the OG of smart drugs. I think it’s important to start with Piracetam as it was not only the first Racetam, but many of the others we’ll go over have similar overall structures/functions to Piracetam.

Piracetam

Reported benefits- Reduced cognitive decline in elderly patients, improved focus, improved memory, slight boost in mood, age related neuroprotection.

Dosage- Piracetam is very subtle/ineffective in smaller doses. Recommended doses start at 1600mg ranging upwards of 4800mg. It’s best to start small and work your way up as well as supplementing with a choline donor.

Possible side effects- Insomnia, drowsiness, agitation, headaches.

Recommended focus stack- 2000mg Piracetam, 400mg Alpha-GPC, 2000mg Lions Mane.

Aniracetam

Reported benefits- Improved mood, enhanced creativity, memory improvement, increased cognition, neuroprotection for cognitive disorders.

Dosage- Aniracetam is a bit stronger than Piracetam, a typical dose is 750mg and can be taken twice daily.

Possible side effects- Anxiety, insomnia, headache.

Recommended mood stack- 750mg Aniracetam, 300mg Alpha GPC, 500mg Ashwagandha.

Oxiracetam

Reported benefits- Slow down or even reverse neurodegenerative diseases, improved focus, improved energy, memory improvement, increased learning ability.

Dosage- Doses range between 600-2400mg, I recommend starting with 800mg at a time and taking it between 2-3 times per day.

Possible side effects- Headaches, nausea, irritability.

Recommended concentration stack- 1000mg Oxiracetam, 400mg Alpha GPC, 1200mg Piracetam.

Pramiracetam

Reported benefits- Improved short term memory recall, increased energy, improved focus, heightened awareness, neuroprotection.

Dosage- Pramiracetam is typically taken between 200-400mg at a time with a cap of about 1000mg in a 24 hour period. Start on the lower end and work your way up as needed.

Possible side effects- Insomnia, overstimulation, headache, nausea.

Recommended energy stack- 300mg Pramiracetam, 400mg Alpha GPC, 100mg Adrafinil.

Phenylpiracetam

Reported benefits- Improved focus, anti fatigue/increased energy, improved reflexes, better memory formation, heightened attention.

Dosage- Typical doses are 100-200mg at a time but range from 10-600mg. Start with a lower dose due to the potent effects.

Possible side effects- Jitteriness, insomnia, headache, irritability.

Recommended performance stack- 100mg Phenylpiracetam, 300mg Alpha GPC, 20mg Vinpocetine.

*Important Note* Phenylpiracetam is banned by the WADA (worlds anti doping agency) for professional/olympic athletes due to its proven performance benefits. Perfectly legal for all of us normal folk to take though.

Coluracetam

Reported benefits- Improved mood, decreased anxiety, neuroprotection, helps to prevent age related cognitive decline, increased focus, increased memory.

Dosage- Oxiracetam is still a fairly new nootropic so doses vary between 2-40mg. I recommend starting with 10mg and working up.

Possible side effects- Insomnia, irritability, headache.

Recommended creativity stack- 20mg Coluracetam, 300mg Alpha GPC, 20mg Noopept.

Fasoracetam

Reported benefits- Improved focus, improved concentration, potential ADHD treatment, increased memory, heightened energy.

Dosage- Fasoracetam is the most recently created Racetam. Doses are noted at 20-100mg but I recommend starting lower at first.

Possible side effects- Insomnia, headache.

Recommended focus stack- 20mg Fasoracetam, 300mg Alpha GPC, 100mg Centrophenoxine.

Closing Thoughts

All Racetams are known for their neuroprotective properties, memory enhancement and improved focus. If you’re looking for an energy boost I would recommend both Phenylpiracetam and Pramiracetam. If you’re looking for a creativity/mood booster I would recommend both Aniracetam and Oxiracetam. If you’ve got ADHD there are some promising benefits (though still fairly new) with Fasoracetam.

Where to buy Racetams: When looking to try out Racetams you want to ensure you’re getting a quality product that’s been tested for purity and heavy metals. I recommend both Nootropics Depot and Pure Nootropics (not affiliated with either of these), because they both offer quality tested Racetams.
